February: A Month of Heroes, Love, and Legacy
Honouring the Constitution and the Extraordinary Namibians who shaped our nation
February is often celebrated as the month of love — a time to honour relationships, unity, and compassion. For us, however, it is a bittersweet month forever etched into the annals of our nation’s history.
On one hand, it marks the significant milestone of drafting a world-renowned Constitution. Crafted in just 80 days by 72 dedicated representatives, this Constitution became the foundation of our democracy and the bedrock of our young nation. Thus, we commemorate Namibia’s Constitution in February.
On the other hand, February is also a historic month of mourning — a time when the nation drew upon its collective strength and resilience to bid farewell to the 3rd President of the Republic of Namibia, who was also the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly.
Dr. Hage Gottfried Geingob was born an ordinary figure in the eyes of many, but he went on to achieve the extraordinary. He fought for Namibia’s freedom, led the nation through daunting challenges like economic downturns, protracted droughts, and the COVID-19 pandemic, and stood as a symbol of courage and vision. It is individuals like him who dared to achieve what others could not even imagine.
To be a Namibian today is to carry the responsibility of being a custodian of a renowned Constitution and the principles enshrined therein. Across the globe, Namibia remains a beacon of hope, bravery, and resilience.
I recently undertook a journey across our great nation, and I could see hope on the faces of children, the quiet resilience of farmers bringing life from parched earth, and the unwavering commitment of nurses working through the night to keep hope alive. Much like Dr. Geingob, all are heroes on unconventional battlefields.
I want you to know that the hero within you matters.
Through every act, you build the foundation upon which the future of this country stands.
This February, as we remember the birth of our democracy through the adoption of a constitution and we honour the heroes of yesterday — ordinary people who chose to do extraordinary things — we are called to embrace our own heroic potential.
Therefore, as we reflect on the gifts that the month of February brings – the commemoration of the Constitution Day and the celebration of love, let us honour the memory of those who came before us by finding the hero within ourselves. Let us rise, as they did, to build a Namibia that stands tall, proud, united, and prosperous.
With appreciation for all the heroes and heroines.
